BARBECUE: DID YOU KNOW?
- Each year, an average of 6,500 grill fires result in nearly $27 million in property loss.
- Mechanical failure or malfunction is by far the leading ignition factor for grill fires.

Dover Fire Department wants you to enjoy your summer safely. Here are some barbecue safety tips:
OPENING YOUR BARBECUE FOR THE SEASON
- Keep your barbecuing set-up in an open area away from the structure of your home.
- Check your gas grill thoroughly for leaks, cracking or brittleness before using it.
- Make sure to position gas hoses as far as possible from hot surfaces and dripping grease.
- Before using a gas grill, check the connection between the propane tank and the fuel line. Make sure the venturi tube(s) - where the air and gas mix - are not blocked.
WHILE USING THE BARBECUE
- NEVER grill in or near enclosed areas. Carbon monoxide could be produced and accumulate, creating a very unsafe condition.
- Be careful when using lighter fluid. Do not add fluid to an already lit fire because the flame can flashback up into the container and explode.
- Do not wear loose clothing while cooking at a barbecue.
- Keep all matches and lighters away from children. Teaching the kids to report any loose matches or lighters to adults is a great way to help keep everyone safe.
REMEMBER STOP, DROP, AND ROLL
- In case a piece of clothing catches fire, remember to:
- Stop where you are immediately.
- Drop to the ground quickly.
- Roll around on the ground to extinguish the fire.
- Be sure to call 911 if a burn warrants medical attention.
